An insight into the different types of sunglasses lenses

Sunglasses lenses

When it comes to sunglasses, it is not only vital to have the right style, but it is just as important to consider the type of lens. With summer soon approaching, it is crucial to make sure you have the proper shades and lens protection in time for a stress-free (and much-needed) day outside.

Typically, there are three types of sunglass lenses to be aware of when choosing your next pair of shades.

Mirrored lenses

Not only do they look cool, mirrored lenses offer another level of comfort and protection when out and about on those warmer days. One of the biggest benefits of mirrored sunglasses is the anonymity of them; this is especially useful for introverted people or people who prefer to keep eye contact to a minimum.

Not only do these lenses come in multiple colours, allowing the wearer to truly adhere to their own, unique and fabulous style, they also have great glare protection, which is why many people opt for these types of lenses when driving or performing particular sports in the sun.

At Arlo Wolf, we have a range of coloured sunglasses lenses, some of our most popular frames are Teller Sun in Tortoise with Silver Mirror Lenses – these shades will truly turn heads this summer. Why not check out our Reign Sun in Crystal, too? Both come with mirrored lenses in blue or green and are hugely popular frames featuring some of our best sunglasses lenses. In fact, all of our sunglasses can be upgraded to Mirrored Lenses – just select the upgrade option when browsing your favourites.

Polarised lenses

Improve clarity and reduce eye-strain on particularly sunny days by opting for polarised lenses for your sunglasses. To filter light, polarised lenses are treated with a specific chemical. The molecules of the chemical are precisely aligned to prevent some of the light from going through the lens.

Polarised sunglasses have a filter that creates vertical light holes. This means that only light rays travelling vertically toward your eyes will be able to pass through those apertures. Horizontal light waves will be blocked by the lenses.

The image that you see with polarized lenses will be darker due to their chemical compound. There are some instances where you shouldn’t wear polarized lenses due to this. Using polarized lenses means you will have difficulty seeing images on LCD (liquid crystal display) screens, such as mobile phones, but polarised lenses are perfect for crystal clear vision when you’re outdoors during the summer months.

Prescription lenses

Gone are the days of flip up sunglasses, now you can get prescription lenses specifically for your shades. If you spend a lot of time behind the wheel or outdoors, then having prescription sunglasses might be the best bet. Prescription sunglasses offer you the comfort of being comfortable in the sun, without worrying about switching to your glasses if you need to read, or do an activity that requires your full attention i.e driving.

Can I have polarised or mirrored lenses with a prescription?

Absolutely! Just select the lens upgrade option you’d like and enter your prescription at checkout. We’ll take care of the rest.
